Badminton 2020 Tokyo Olympic Review

Men’s Singles

The number one seed and home favourite Kento Momota (Japan) was the big name to be knocked out of the group stages, going down in straight sets to Heo Kwang-hee (South Korea). Kevin Cordon (Guatemala) won Group C over Ng Ka Long (Hong Kong) and Mark Caljouw (Netherlands) took Group D ahead of Bhamidipati Sai Praneeth (India). The other upset in the groups came as Toby Penty (Great Britain) finished above Kantaphon Wangcharoen (Thailand). Cordon beat Caljouw in the elimination round to set up a quarter-final with Kwang-hee. The rest of the games mainly went as expected. Cordon won in straight sets to make the semi-final. With the elimination of Momota, Viktor Axelsen (Denmark) was the favourite and took his own straight sets win. His compatriot Anders Antonsen (Denmark) was upset by Anthony Sinisuka Ginting (Singapore) so would go on to face Chen Long (China) in the semi. It was a straight sets victory for Axelsen and Long to set up the final many expected. In the third place playoff, Ginting got the straight sets victory over Cordon. The final was also in straight sets as Axelsen got a big victory.

Men’s Doubles

The pair affectionately known as the minions came through as the winners in group A despite losing their final game. Gideon/Sukamuljo (Indonesia) won the group on games difference whilst Yang/Chi-lin (Taiwan) finished second on points difference. Endo/Watanabe (Japan) won group B without losing a set. It was the same story for Yuchen/Junhui (China) in group C ahead of Sonoda/Kamura (Japan). Ahsan/Setiawan (Indonesia) took group D. The minions were upset before the medal stages, losing to Chia/Yik (Malaysia) in straight sets. The aforementioned Chinese pair took the win after losing the opening set. Another seed went out as Endo/Watanabe lost to Yang/Chi-lin (Taiwan) in straight sets. The other Japanese pair also went out, losing in three sets to the Indonesia pair. The Taiwanese duo beat Ahsan/Setiawan in straight sets where they would meet Yuchen/Junhui who also won in straight sets. It was the Taiwanese pair who took the gold medal, winning in a good straight sets win. In the bronze medal matchup, the Malaysians took the victory, after losing the first set.

Women’s Singles

The badminton group stages went exactly to seeding, leaving a fascinating knockout phase. The elimination round also went to plan, leaving eight of the top nine in the world in the quarter-finals, only Carolina Marin missing through injury. In the quarter-final Chen Yufei (China) won in straight sets to set up an all-Chinese semi with He Bingjao (China) who upset Nozomi Okuhara (Japan). Tai Tzu-ying (Taiwan) came through despite losing the first set and no doubt expected to come up against Akane Yamaguchi (Japan) but she was defeated by P.V. Sindhu (Japan) in straight sets. Chen Yufei beat her compatriot two sets to one and would go on to face Tsu-ying who had an impressive straight sets victories over Sindhu. In the third-place playoff, Sindhu beat Bingjao for bronze. Yufei took the first set of the gold medal matchup, winning 21-18. The final saw Yufei taking a large lead early and although Tsu-ying got closer, she could never get back into the lead, losing 21-18.

Women’s Doubles

There was an upset in group A as Polii/Rahayu (Indonesia) beat the number one seeds Fukushima/Hirota (Japan). The Japanese pair in group B, Matsumoto/Nagahara (Japan) won the group without losing a set. Group C saw all the teams win and lose fixtures but So-hee/Seung-chan (South Korea) still claimed the top spot ahead of Yue/Yinhua (China). Yifan/Qingchen (China) went unbeaten through the group stage and as a reward received the draw of Fukushima/Hirota in the quarter-final. Indonesia won a great three-set battle against Yue/Yinhua to go on and play the Korean pair in the semi-final. The other South Korean pair So-yeong/Hee-yong (South Korea) got an upset win over Matsumoto/Nagahara going to 28-26 in the third set. In the battle of the top seeds, Yifan/Qingchan won in three sets. Both of the Korean pairs went out in the semi-final, losing in straight sets. Both of the medal games also finished in straight sets, with it being a bit of a surprise as the Indonesians beat the remaining Chinese pair.

Mixed Doubles

Group A went to seed as Siwei/Yaqiong (China) took the group ahead of Seung-jae/Yoo-Jung (South Korea). In Group B, Smith/Ellis (Great Britain) caused a shock by defeating Puavaranukroh/Taerattanachai (Thailand). Watanabe/Higashino (Japan) were another of the second seeds to take the group win winning in straight sets ahead of Jordan/Oktavianti (Indonesia). Another Chinese pair took Group D in Yilyu/Dongping (China). All the winners of the group went through except for the British pair who were defeated by Man/Suet (Hong Kong). In the semi-finals, Yilyu/Dongping rebounded from losing the opening set to beat the Japanese pair. To meet them in the final, Siwei/Yaqiong took a straight sets win. In the final, each team took a set 21-17. In the third set, it was the second-seeded Yilyu/Dongping who won 21-19. The Japanese pair took bronze with a straight sets win.
