Updated: Sep 19, 2022

Men’s Event

Mol/Sorum (Norway) entered as the favourites despite a relative lack of form but that came to the forefront as Semenov/Leshukov (Russia) won Pool A. Pool B was won by the world champions Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy (Russia) despite a loss to Tocs/Plavins (Latvia). Form team of the season Ahmed/Younousse (Qatar) won Pool C undefeated, ahead of Gibb/Bourne (United States). Pool D was filled with Olympic medalists of the past and it was Alison/Alvaro (Brazil) who won ahead of Brouwer/Meeuwsen (Netherlands) and Lucena/Dalhausser (United States). Schmidt/Evandro (Brazil) won Pool E ahead of the seeded but out-of-form Bryl/Fijalek (Poland). Silver medalists from Rio Nicolai/Lupo (Italy) won Pool F. The Norwegian pair would show some form beating the Dutch team in straight sets. Tocs/Plavins were able to get a second big win in this competition beating Schmidt/Evandro whilst Semenov/Leshukov got a straight sets victory. Nicolai/Lupo, Alison/Alvaro and Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy also cruised through in straight sets. In the final round of sixteen clash, Thole/Wickler (Germany) got a tight win over Gibb/Bourne. The Norwegian pair would get revenge on Semenov/Leshukov, winning in straight sets. Also winning in straight sets were Tocs/Plavins. All four quarter-finals ended up being decided in straight sets as Krasilnikov/Stoyanovskiy and Ahmed/Younousse also managed it. In the semi-finals, it was once again straight-set victories, going this time to Norway and Russia. To continue the trend it was two straight-set victories on finals day. The Qatari pair won a dominant first set and followed up to take the second. In the final, the Norwegians started the first set slowly but were able to rally back into it and never looked back.

Women’s Event

World champions Pavan/Humana-Paredes (Canada) won Pool A without losing a set. The runners-up from that tournament Ross/Klineman (United States) won Pool B. The number one team in the world rankings were Agatha/Duda (Brazil) but they were beaten by the inconsistent Fan/Xinyi (China). Claes/Sponcil (United States) lost sets to both of their main rivals but managed to win Pool D. In Pool E it was one of the form teams in 2021, Makgroguzova/Kholomina (Russia) who beat the underrated Artacho del Solar/Clancy (Australia). Betschart/Huberli (Switzerland) took Pool F over reigning Olympic champion Ludwig/Kozuch (Germany) with her new partner in second. In the knockout stages, the tough defending of Barnsley/Brandie (Canada) helped them to upset Claes/Sponcil. Ana/Rebecca (Brazil) defeated Fan/Xinyi. The Latvian pair of Graudina/Kravcenoka (Latvia) upset Makgroguzova/Kholomina (Russia). After the first three knockout games, all of the teams who performed better in the group stages had been knocked out. Another upset saw Ludwig/Kozuch defeat Agatha/Duda with Ludwig getting another win in a big Olympic game over Agatha. The Swiss teams matched up and it was Verge-Depre/Heideich (Switzerland) who took the 23-21 win in the final set. Artacho del Solar/Clancy took a straight sets win. The two favourites Pavan/Humana-Paredes and Ross/Klineman both cruised through the quarter-finals in straight sets. In the quarter-finals the remaining American team beat Germany in straight sets, winning both 21-19. The Latvian team would beat Barnsley/Brandie 2-1 in the quarter-finals whilst the other Canadian would also go down 2-1 to the Australian team. It was straight sets in the semi-finals for the two favourites setting up a finals match-up between Artacho del Solar/Clancy and Ross/Klineman. Once again it was straight sets, with victories for the American and Swiss teams in the medal matchups.
