Updated: Sep 20, 2022

Men’s Race

In the seeding runs, seven men went under 35 seconds led by Joris Daudet (France) and David Graf (Switzerland). Daudet would go out in the quarter-finals, with two did not finish efforts. That heat was won by Jelle Van Gorkom (Netherlands). Sam Willoughby (Australia) looked to be a danger, winning all three of his races. The fastest time set in the heats was his compatriot Anthony Dean (Australia). Other big names to miss out on qualification were Maris Strombergs (Latvia) and Liam Phillips (Great Britain). The two Australians would go on to dominate the semi-finals, both Dean and Willoughby winning all three semi-finals. Willoughby was the fastest but they were joined by Nicholas Long (United States) and Connor Fields (United States) in going sub-35 seconds. Despite their great performances, neither Australian would medal. Fields and Long led heading round the first corner with Willoughby going backwards as he struggled over the bumps.

Women’s Race

This time there were two names under 35 seconds, with Mariana Pavon (Colombia) leading Caroline Buchanan (Australia). Pavon went on to win all three of her semi-final runs, twice going under 35 seconds. Alise Post (United States) came second in the semi-final but Stefany Hernandez (Venezuela) managed to go sub-35. On the other side of the draw, Buchanan failed to make the final after a horror last run. Laura Smulders (Netherlands) won the semi-final ahead of Brooke Crain (United States). Pajón was out in the lead in the final, narrowly avoiding a crash with Post but no one could get near her and she led through the whole track.
