Men’s Event

Brazil struggled early with two 0-0 draws but in their final group game, got a 4-0 win over Denmark who also qualified. Nigeria won group B including a 5-4 win over Japan with Colombia qualifying in second. Germany scored fifteen goals in group C but it was only enough to qualify second. Portugal would also top their group, over Hondarus which saw Argentina head home. In the knockout rounds, Germany showed their class with a 4-0 win over Portugal. Nigeria and Brazil both won 2-0 while Honduras edged South Korea 1-0. Their run would end in the semi-final as Brazil beat them 6-0 to set up a final with Germany and potential revenge for the 2014 World Cup. It would go to penalties after a 1-1 draw and Neymar would score the winning penalty.

Women’s Event

The format meant only four teams went out in the group stage and it was the expected teams in New Zealand, Colombia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The quarter-finals saw two penalty shootouts. Brazil would dispatch of Australia with a 7-6 victory. Sweden would provide the shock of the round when upsetting the United States after a 1-1 draw. Canada would beat France leaving Germany as strong favourites. They made their way to the final with a 2-0 win over Canada. In the other semi-final once again Sweden and Brazil would head to a penalty shootout. This time Sweden would get the win, disappointing the adoring home crowd. They couldn’t even win bronze, going down to Canada while Germany got the win over Sweden.
