Updated: Sep 20, 2022

Men’s Event

The golf event was stung by withdrawals due to the Zika virus but still featured some big names. Marcus Fraser (Australia) took the first-round lead with a brilliant nine birdies. Three shots back were Graham De Laet (Canada) and Henrik Stenson (Sweden). Fraser’s lead was pulled back in round two by Thomas Pieters (Belgium) who sat a shot behind. The leaderboard at the end of day two featured thirteen different nationalities in the top thirteen. Justin Rose (Great Britain) fired a six-under third round to take the lead, sitting one ahead of Stenson. Fraser was two back from Stenson with a cluster of three, three behind him. On the final day, Rose and Stenson separated themselves and both sat on -15 on the final tee. Rose would hit a superb second shot, leaving an easy putt for birdie to take gold. Matt Kuchar (United States) shot a brilliant -8 to get into the bronze medal position.

Women’s Event

Ariya Jutanugarn (Thailand) led after the first round, with a good -6 round despite a double bogey. Inbee Park (South Korea) was only a shot back after time off from an injury as she went round with no bogeys. Alongside her was Kim Sei-young (South Korea) while Lydia Ko (New Zealand) was back on -2 after an impressive late eagle. Park led after round two with another round of 66. Stacy Lewis (United States) had an eight-under round to get into second while Brooke Henderson (Canada) went seven under to join Charley Hull (Great Britain) in third. Park only gained one shot in the third round but her closest competition mainly went backwards. Instead, it was Lydia Ko who pulled into second with a round of 65. Jutanugarn pulled out halfway round with a knee injury. Ko couldn’t back her up 66, struggling to a 69 and instead, Park pulled away to win by five shots.
