Men’s Event

There was a shock in the group stage as Slovenia beat France to take Pool A. Italy finished above Poland in Pool B, while United States topped Pool C. Italy battled in the quarter finals, coming from 2-0 down to beat Japan, not winning a set by more than two points. France also came from 2-0 down to defeat Germany. The United States and Poland both claimed 3-1 victories to make the semi-finals. France defeated Italy in straight sets to make the final, while Poland came from 2-1 down to defeat United States. Neither of the medal matchups were as close, as the United States and France both won in straight sets.

I got the final four correct but expected Italy to beat United States to win bronze 

Women’s Event

China topped Pool A over the United States. In Pool B, Brazil advanced without dropping a set whilst Italy only lost one on the way to winning Pool C. In the quarter finals, China were upset by Turkey despite winning the first set. Brazil, Italy and the United States all progressed in straight sets. Italy then won in straight sets against Turkey. The other semi-final saw the United States edge Brazil in a five set thriller with strong attacking play. Brazil would beat Turkey three sets to one in the bronze medal matchup. In the final, Italy won in straight sets, dominating with blocks at the net.

I was correct with the three group winners. I got two out of four of the semi finalists but only one medalist. I did say this was the more open tournament
