Li Fabin (China) entered as the world record holder and started well with 141kg in the snatch. Eko Yuli Irawan (Indonesia) was second on 137kg, looking to add her fourth Olympic medal. Yoichi Itokazu (Japan) led Igor Son (Kazakhstan) and Shota Mishvelidze (Georgia). Fabin set an Olympic record of 172 in the clean and jerk making her total an Olympic record of 313. Irawan lifted a 165 and Son got to 163 leaving that as the top three.

Men’s -67kg
Chen Lijun (China) set a world record in 2019 and was the favourite here. Luis Javier Mosquera (Colombia) took the lead in the snatch category lifting 151kg. Talha Talib (Pakistan) lifted 150kg and Myeongmok Han (South Korea) 147kg. Lijun needed a big clean and jerk and lifted an Olympic record 187kg. Mosquera improved on his bronze from 2016 with a 180kg lift, missing out on gold by 1kg. Despite a poor snatch, it was Mirko Zanni (Italy) who took gold, beating Han and Talib by 1kg and 2kg.

Men’s -73kg
Shi Zhiyong (China) entered as the world record holder in every category and came out with a snatch lift of 158kg. He improved to an Olympic record of 166kg. Briken Calja (Albania) was the man who attempted the next highest weight on his opening turn at 151kg but only got it on the second attempted and that left him seventh. Julio Mayora (Venezuela) lifted 156kg, Marin Robu (Moldova) lifted 155kg and Bozhidar Andreev (Bulgaria) lifted 154kg. Zhiyong started the clean and jerk at 188kg, ending up lifting an Olympic record of 198kg, helping him set a total world record of 364kg. Three men lifted 190kg and it came down to the order they finished in snatch which was Mayora, Rahmat Erwin Abdullah (Indonesia) and Caja.

Men’s -81kg
Both Lu Xiaojun (China) and Antonino Pizzolato (Italy) opened the snatch category at 165kg. Neither landed it then but both did in the second round only for Xiaojun to go on and lift an Olympic record of 170kg. Rejepbay Rejepow (Turkmenistan) lifted 164kg with many lifters back on 163kg. Pizzolato opened with 200kg ahead of Zacarias Bonnat (Dominican Republic) with 198kg and Xiaojun with 197kg. Xiaojun would go onto 204kg with Bonnat 202kg. Bonnat would match that on his third lift to see the set a joint Olympic record. Xiaojun set an overall Olympic record ahead of Bonnat, with Pizzolato not landing another lift and Rejepow also missing out on the medals, not landing a single lift.

This was a tight category. Boady Santavy (Canada) led after the snatch, lifting 178kg with Fares Ibrahim (Qatar), Keydomar Vallenilla (Venezuela) and Anton Pliesnoi (Georgia) lifting 177kg. Chen Po-jen (Taiwan) was slightly behind them on 176kg having failed at lifting 180kg. Ibrahim took the lead, lifting 217kg in the opening round of the clean and jerk to lead Vallenilla on 210kg. These were more than enough although Ibrahim went on to lift 225kg to set an Olympic record of 407kg.

Simon Martirosyan (Armenia) attempted the toughest opening lift in the opening round, lifting 190kg. He would go on to lift 195kg, an Olympic record. Behind him were Akbar Djuraev (Uzbekistan) and Hristo Hristov (Bulgaria). Martirosyan opened with a lift of 228kg, a kilo over Djuraev. Djuraev would go on to lift 237kg, with Martirosyan not managing another lift, setting an Olympic record of 430kg. Arturs Plesnieks (Latvia) managed to land all three lifts, finishing on 230kg, allowing him to take bronze.

Lasha Talakhadze (Georgia) was so dominant in this weight class. Second, on the snatch was Ali Davoudi (Iran) and his best lift of 200kg was lower than the weight Talakhadze entered. He entered at 208kg and would make all of his lifts to total a world record 223kg. Behind Davoudi was Man Asaad (Syria). In the clean and jerk, again Talakhadze would enter higher than anyone else lifted. It was Davoudi at 241kg ahead of David Liti (New Zealand) at 236kg but he could not pass Asaad. Talakhadze would again lift all three of his weights, setting a world record of 265kg totalling 488kg, 3kg above his own world record.

Zhihui Hou (China) set a world record in April and was clear of the opposition. She set Olympic records in every category and took the title by eight kilograms. Behind her, after the snatch event were Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (India) and Jourdan Delacruz (United States). Entering the clean and jerk at 108kg, she never recorded a lift, leaving her eliminated. If she had made the lift, she would have tied with eventual bronze medalist Windy Catinka Aisah (Indonesia). Instead, Aisah was clear to take bronze, 13kg ahead of Fang Wan-ling (Taiwan)

Muattar Nabieva (Uzbekistan) set an Olympic record of 98kg in the snatch round, only getting that in her final lift. Both Hidalyn Diaz (Philippines) and Liao Qiuyun (China) lifted 97kg. Only four lifters landed their first clean and jerk lift with Diaz leading due to a lift of 119kg compared to the 118kg of Qiuyun. Zulfiya Chinshanlo (Kazakhstan) landed a big 123kg to put herself in contention but Diaz and Qiuyun improved to 124kg and 123kg respectively. Entering the final round they both put 3kg on the bar, but both ladies managed to lift it meaning Diaz became the first Filipino gold medalist at the Olympics.

World record holder Kuo Hsing-chen (Taiwan) came out heavy in the snatch with an opening 100kg lift. No one else would even attempt a lift that heavy. She would increase it in the final round to 103kg setting a snatch Olympic record. Dora Tchakounte (France) and Polina Guryeva (Turkmenistan) both lifted 96kg whilst Alexandra Escobar (Ecuador) who entered at 95kg did not manage to score a lift. Once again in the clean and jerk, Hsing-chen entered at 125kg which no one else even attempted. She lifted 133kg, an Olympic record in itself to complete a total record of 236kg. The other medals would come down to lifts in the final round with Gureveya lifting 121kg and Mikiko Ando (Japan) 120kg.

Maude Charron (Canada) started the final well lifting 105kg in the snatch event. Behind her Angie Palacios (Ecuador) and Giorgio Bordignon (Italy) sat on 104kg. In the opening clean and jerk round Chen Wei-huei (Taiwan) took the overall lead with a lift of 127kg. Sarah Davies (Great Britain) would match the 127kg but was only in fourth as both Charron and Bordignon landed similar lifts. Both improved in the final, whilst Davies tried to land a lift good enough to get the silver but could not manage it.

Neisi Dajomes (Ecuador) had the best snatch, improving each round finishing on 118kg. Behind her were Iryna Dekha (Ukraine) and Katherine Nye (United States). Once again, Dajomes would improve in each round of the clean and jerk, with a best lift of 145kg to take gold. Behind her, the medal placings actually finished in the same order as the clean and jerk placings. Nye was in second place ahead of Aremi Fuentes (Mexico) as Dekha failed to score a lift.

Despite not managing her first lift, Wang Zhouyu (China) led the snatch phase by 4kg ahead of Crismery Santana (Dominican Republic) and a further 3kg back was Tamara Salazar (Ecuador). Both Zhouyu and Salazar would lift 150kg in the clean and jerk. Mönkhjantsangiin Ankhtsetseg (Mongolia) would beat Santana in that phase but not by far enough to take bronze.

Li Wenwen (China) was the second heaviest competitor in the field and took a big early lead, setting an Olympic record snatch score of 140kg. Behind her was Sarah Robles (United States) on 128kg and Lee Seon-mi (South Korea) on 125kg. Controversial athlete Laurel Hubbard (New Zealand) did not manage a lift, failing at 125kg. Wenwen set another Olympic record in the clean and jerk of 180kg which also was an overall record. Emily Campbell (Great Britain) lifted 161kg to secure second.
