Men’s Event
The opening games saw a big upset as France beat the United States 83-76 behind a big Evan Fournier game. Another shock came as Slovenia beat Argentina 118-100 with Luka Doncic scoring an incredible 48 points. The second set of fixtures went mainly to form with Spain beating Argentina. By virtue of points difference, the United States managed to qualify at the top second place seed. Australia won Group B ahead of Italy and Germany. Slovenia took Group C with a 95-87 win over Spain. Slovenia won the opening quarter-final 94-70 despite a quiet Luka Doncic game. At half time the United States and Spain were tied, only for the United States to pull away and win 95-81. France would beat Italy 84-75. Australia took the biggest semi-final victory with a 97-59 score over Argentina. Behind the 23 points of Kevin Durant, the United States took a 97-78 victory despite being 15 points down. A big third quarter allowed France to lead by six, and with time expiring Nicholas Batum blocked a shot from Klemen Prepelic to give France the 90-89 win. In the final, the United States would look to get revenge for their opening game defeat. Led by Kevin Durant’s 29 points they beat France 87-82. In the bronze medal, it was a 42-point explosion from Patty Mills to lead them to a 107-93 win.

Women’s Event
Spain opened Group A with a four-point win over South Korea and Serbia upset Canada with the same four-point margin. Another upset by four points was Japan beating France in Group B. Perhaps less of a surprise but still an upset by the books was Belgium beating Australia, led by a 32-9-5 from Emma Meesseman. China got the upset over Australia in the second set of fixtures. Australia entered their final game, needing a win by 24 and scoring over 64 total points. They managed it, setting themselves up with a quarter-final against the United States. Despite being down by nine points entering the final round, Serbia would beat China 77-70. The United States would dominate each of the first three quarters to breeze to a 79-55 victory. Down 61-68 at the end of the third quarter, Rui Machida would hit a three to give Japan an 86-85 victory over Belgium. France led 55-48 but Spain mounted a fourth-quarter comeback to go into a 60-57 lead. France would score 10 of the next 14 points to make the semis. The United States would dominate their semi with a 79-59 win over Serbia. Japan would cause another shock with an 87-71 victory over France. Serbia would win the first quarter against France but could not win any other quarters so France won bronze. The United States took the lead early in the final and would never give it up, winning 90-75.

Men’s 3x3 Event
At the halfway point of the group stages, Serbia was top and undefeated with four wins. Behind them, Latvia and Netherlands had won three out of four. China was the only country at halfway with no win. They changed that with a win in their fifth group game beating Belgium. Serbia and Russia started the day with wins over Japan. Serbia beat Latvia but the Netherlands could not take advantage, going down in overtime to Belgium. Poland was defeated by China and Netherlands whilst Latvia was again beaten, this time by Russia. Serbia would finish the group unbeaten with four teams on four wins led by Belgium ahead of Latvia and the Netherlands. In the quarter-finals, Russia beat the Netherlands 21-19 to set up the clash with Serbia whilst Latvia beat Russia 21-18 to set up the Belgium game. Russia opened the semi-finals with a 21-10 win over Serbia. Latvia took a massive 21-8 over Belgium. Serbia won 21-10 to secure bronze. Latvia led Russia with less than 2 minutes remaining. At the minute mark, Latvia had the 19-18 edge. A big two-pointer gave them the crown.

Women’s 3x3 Event
It was the United States who were unbeaten at the halfway stage, with Russia, Japan and China all on three wins. Mongolia and Romania both had no wins and it seemed like the pattern was clear. Romania got the win over Mongolia. China got a win over Japan and the US kept up its unbeaten record. Japan would take that unbeaten record from the US in the final game. This meant they finished fourth on four wins alongside China and Russia. France beat Japan to qualify to play the United States whilst China won to go on to play Russia. The United States took the first semi-final 18-16. Russia took a big win 21-14 against China. The bronze medal game was tight but it was China who got a 16-14 win over France. The United States grabbed a lead in the gold medal game and never relinquished it, winning gold with an 18-15 victory.
