Men’s Event
Only four men ducked under 2 minutes for the swimming, led by James Cooke (Great Britain), who set an Olympic record. Another Olympic record came in the fencing event as Aleksander Lesun (Russia) scored 28 to lead ahead of Joseph Choong (Great Britain). Two men ducked under 70 seconds during the riding discipline with Pavlo Tymoshchenko (Ukraine) and Adam Marosi (Hungary) but neither scored 300 points. Lesun led heading into the final stage and managed a clear round of shooting to take the gold medal, narrowly missing his world record. The quickest final stage came from Jun Woong-Tae (South Korea) but he was too far off to land a medal. Instead, the big move came from Tymoshchenko moved from eighth to second whilst Choong had a horrific final event to fall from second to tenth.

Women’s Event
It was Gulnaz Gubaydullina (Rússia) who set an Olympic record in the swimming section of the event, giving her a lead over Élodie Clouvel (France) and Sarolta Kovacs (Hungary). The lead was captured by Oktawia Nowacka (Poland) in the fencing section of the event. The riding round was especially dramatic with six athletes scoring zero due to multiple refusals or falls. These included 2012 champion Laura Asadauskaite (Lithuania), who would have won the gold medal with a perfect round. Five women scored perfect rounds in the riding event but Nowacka still led. The most notable improver was Melanie McCann (Canada) who jumped up to third. Nowacka held onto her lead early and stayed poised in the shooting, but would fade late on. Instead, it was Chloe Esposito (Australia) who took advantage, running past her and holding on for the gold medal, running a great time. It was only beaten by Asadauskaite, who set an Olympic record, way down the field.
