Men’s Events

Fiji and Great Britain were the two teams who went through the pools unbeaten. It was Japan and Argentina who qualified second in both of those groups with two wins. In the third group, three teams all went through with two wins. South Africa topped the group despite their loss to Australia, whilst France qualified in second. Fiji got a strong win over New Zealand to make the semi-finals where they came up against Japan who engineered a second-half comeback against France. Fiji battered them in the semi-final. Great Britain edged Argentina in extra time and would face South Africa in the semi who they’d beat, after another comeback from being 5-0 down. In the final, Fiji ran seven tries past Great Britain to get the win. Not to be outdone, South Africa got eight in the third-place playoff.

Women’s Event

New Zealand and Great Britain were the two teams who won their groups whilst winning every game. Australia won the other group, unbeaten, but that included a draw with the United States, which helped them to make the quarter-finals. Australia got a 24-0 win over Spain to set up a Canada semi-final after they beat France. New Zealand struggled to a victory over the United States and Great Britain beat Fiji. New Zealand turned it on in the semi-final, with Portia Woodman scoring a hat trick to help beat Great Britain 25-7. Australia got the win over Canada to set up the big final which they comfortably took 24-17.
