Sailing 2024 Paris Olympics Review

Men’s IQ Foil

The opening race was taken by Nicolas Goyard (France). Day two saw five races which was led by Luuc van Opzeeland (Netherlands) who won two races and Pawel Tarnowski (Poland). On the following day, Sebastian Kordel (Germany) had two wins but his poor results so far meant it was probably too late. Grae Morris (Australia) had a win and two seconds as well. The final day saw Nicolo Renna (Italy) be most consistent but it was Morris who took the overall win. That gave him a bye to the medal race. Van Opzeeland would win both the quarter and semi finals to make the medal race with Tom Reuveny (Israel) finishing second in the semi after his quarter final bye. Reuveny had not won a race in the whole regatta but picked his time perfectly by winning the medal race.

🥇Tom Reuveny 🇮🇱

🥈Grae Morris 🇦🇺

🥉Luuc van Opzeeland 🇳🇱

Goyard never really got into the race after the first race. I mentioned the podium finishers as part of the top seven but went for the wrong options.

Men’s Laser

Stefano Peschiera (Peru) would take the lead on day one. Day two saw Lorenzo Chiavarini (Italy) score best. Day three saw the best day by a huge chunk as Matthew Wearn (Australia) was first then second. It was back to the general inconsistency on day four as Hermann Tomasgaard (Norway) went strongest. Heading into the medal race Wearn led by 14 points from Pavlos Kontides (Cyprus). He would seal gold by winning the race. Peschiera would just about hang onto bronze despite a ninth placed finish in the medal race.

🥇Matthew Wearn 🇦🇺

🥈Pavlos Kontides 🇨🇾

🥉Stefano Peschiera 🇵🇪

I thought Wearn would get a hard fought victory from Beckett but Wearn won quite comfortably. Beckett was in the race for bronze but had a poor medal race.

Men’s Kiteboarding

The initial series was about getting a bye to the final. Toni Vodisek (Slovenia) went best on day one. The only race on day two was won by Riccardo Pianosi (Italy). Markus Edgeran (United States) had the best day three to get himself into the final stages. A lack of wind meant there was only seven races instead of sixteen. Vodisek led the overall standings from Maximilian Maeder (Singapore). Riccardo Pianosi (Italy) and Valentin Bontus (Austria) came through in the semi final. Bontus would take three straight wins in the final series to take gold.

🥇Valentin Bontus 🇦🇹

🥈Toni Vodisek 🇸🇮

🥉Maximilian Maeder 🇸🇬

The format lends itself to an outsider and all were mentioned as part of the six likely medalists. Unfortunately I went for the wrong choices with Bainbridge and Mazella missing the medal race.

Men’s 49er

McHardie/McKenzie (New Zealand) would take the opening race and they led at the end of the opening day. They would take two races on day two to extend the advantage. It was day three where Botin/Trittel (Spain) clawed their way back into the race. Fantela/Fantela (Croatia) would score best on day four to make the final. Spain led Dickson/Waddilove (Ireland) entering the medal race and would take the win to secure gold. The Irish pair only finished ninth and would miss out on a medal.

🥇Diego Botin/Florian Trittel 🇪🇸

🥈Isaac McHardie/William McKenzie 🇳🇿

🥉Ian Barrows/Hans Henken 🇺🇸

Prediction analysis; 1 medalist correct: The Dutch pair not medalling was a massive surprise. I thought France would be stronger, especially at home.

MArseille regatta proved a perfect spot, when the wind blew!

Women’s IQ Foil

Emma Wilson (Great Britain) was utterly dominant, in the race series of the event. She only finished outside the top three once winning eight races. Sharon Kantor (Israel) was second, taking three race wins whilst Marta Maggetti(Italy) was third despite not winning any. Yan Zheng (China) would win the quarter final and it was Kantor who took the semi final. In the final, it was a strong open from Wilson but a layline error allowed the others to get passed her. It was Maggetti who took her first race win and this the gold, a format which Wilson would moan about after.

🥇Marta Maggetti 🇮🇹

🥈Sharon Kantor 🇮🇱

🥉Emma Wilson 🇬🇧

Again, the format lends itself to surprises. Wilson was the dominant sailor but couldn’t produce in the medal races. I mentioned Maggetti as a possible danger.

As always, the French home crowd were very loud

Women’s Laser Radial

Marit Bouwmeester (Netherlands) quickly showed herself as the dominant sailor, not finishing outside the first four in the first seven races. She had confirmed gold before the medal race. Anne-Marie Rindom (Denmark) also managed the same with the silver medal. In bronze was Line Flem Host (Norway) with two second places and two thirds.

🥇Marit Bouwmeester 🇳🇱

🥈Anne Marie Rindom 🇩🇰

🥉Line Flem Host 🇳🇴

I got the two top correct. Host wasn’t someone I suggested could get onto the podium

Marit Bouwmeester got the win

Women’s Kiteboarding

The regatta was put into chaos as only six races instead of sixteen were complete due to inadequate wind. Eleanor Aldridge (Great Britain) and Lauriane Nolot (France) would both score 12 points to lead the standings. Daniela Moroz (United States) and Annelous Lammerts (Netherlands) both won their semi finals in one race to make the final. Aldridge would win the first final race. A brilliant tack from Aldridge in the second race would allow her to get in front and take gold.

🥇Eleanor Aldridge 🇬🇧

🥈Lauriane Nolot 🇫🇷

🥉Annelous Lammerts 🇳🇱

My three medalist predictions all made the final four but Lammerts was able to get ahead of Moroz to get the final medal position.

Women’s 49er FX

Van Aanholt/Duetz (Netherlands) would win two events on day one but it was Steyaert/Picon (France) who performed best with three second place finishes. Germani/Bertuzzi (Italy) would have the best of day two. Aleh/Meech (New Zealand) would go third, second and first on day three to put themselves back in contention after an awful start. Bobeck/Netzler (Sweden) would win two events on day four. The French pair would lead entering the medal race from a point to Netherlands. The medal race was won by the Swedes, clearly entering top form towards the end of the race. Netherlands were able to take third, enough to take gold as France could only finish sixth.

🥇Odile van Aanholt/Annette Duetz 🇳🇱

🥈Vilma Bobeck/Rebecca Netzler 🇸🇪

🥉Sarah Steyaert/Charline Picon 🇫🇷

I got the two top correct. Brazil didn’t really compete after a poor start whilst the French team were not on my radar.

Mixed 470

The first day of racing saw Okada/Yoshioka (Japan) take an early lead. Dahlberg/Karlsson (Sweden) went best in day two with a first and second despite Vadlau/Mahr (Austria) having a first and a third. Costa/Joao (Portugal) would have the best of day three. The Austrians would have a strong day on day four which put them into the lead. They could only finish seventh in the medal race but the Japanese pair could only take third having led the race, which allowed Austria to take gold. Xammar/Brugman (Spain) would go from second to fourth overall with a ninth placed finish.

🥇Lara Vadlau/Lukas Mahr 🇦🇹

🥈Keiju Okada/Miho Yoshioka 🇯🇵

🥉Anton Dahlberg/Lovisa Karlsson 🇸🇪

I was surprised by the struggles of Spain as well as the performances of the Austrian and Swedish boats.

The 470 was closely contested

Mixed Nacra17

Tita/Banti (Italy) were one of the more dominant boats at the regatta. After seven races they had six wins and a second. With five seconds and a win Majdalani/Bosco (Argentina) entered the medal race in second. Gimson/Burnet (Great Britain) and Wilkinson/Dawson (New Zealand) entered the medal race tied for bronze. A disastrous start put paid to British medal hopes as they were adjudged to be over the line at the start, eliminating them from the race.

🥇Ruggero Tita/Caterina Banti 🇮🇹

🥈Mateo Majdalani/Eugenia Bosco 🇦🇷

🥉Micah Wilkinson/Erica Dawson 🇳🇿

I favoured the Italians. I did think the British pair would compete and do think they would have got a medal if they managed to complete the medal race. Finland never really got involved whilst I did mention New Zealand as a danger.

The 470 boat was dominated by the Italians
