Trampoline 2024 Paris Olympics Preview

Updated: Jul 25, 2024

Men’s Event

China has dominated this event, medalling in the last four Olympics. Their leading candidate is Langyu Yan (China) who is the reigning World Champion. He also won that title in 2021 and is the Asian Games champion. He won the 2023 World Cup events in Santarem and Varna but was beaten by his teammate in Coimbra. That was Zisai Wang (China) who otherwise spent the year finishing second. He will not long have turned 19 for the Olympics and got the win over Yan in the 2024 World Cup event in Baku. Behind both of the Chinese competitors in third at the 2023 World Championship was Ryusei Nishioka (Japan) who had won silver in 2021. Fourth-placed finisher was Gabriel Albuquerque (Portugal). Another former world champion is Dylan Schmidt (New Zealand) who took the title in 2022. He was an Olympic medalist when he won bronze in Tokyo. The gold medalist in Tokyo was Ivan Litvinovich (Belarus) and he returned to international competition this year with two World Cup bronze medals. Angel Hernandez (Colombia) is the reigning Pan-American Games winner where he beat Rayan Dutra (Brazil). Pierre Gouzou (France) was runner up at the 2024 European Championship. Danil Mussabayev (Kazakhstan) was second in the 2023 Asian Games and won the World Cup event in Baku. Zak Perzamanos (Great Britain) was second in the Coimbra event in 2022 and was fifth in the 2023 World Championship, finishing ahead of Benny Wizani (Austria). Brock Batty (Australia) has been dominant in the junior ranks and will become the youngest ever Olympic trampolinist. Aliaksei Shostak (United States) , David Vega (Spain) and Fabian Vogel (Germany) will also compete.

This battle should come down to the Chinese pair. Behind them, Nishioka and Schmidt have been strongest recently but Litvinovich needs respect as the reigning Olympic champion. Gouzou will no doubt be boosted at home as well, which could push him into contender status. I think I have to go chalk here with the Yan beating the potential of Wang whilst Litvinovich has shown a level of form already this year that has him capable of beating the rest of the field.

🥉Ivan Litvinovich 🇧🇾

Women’s Event

China has won medals at every rendition of this event apart from the inaugural. They will have the reigning Olympic champion Zhu Xueying (China). She also has two World Championship silver medals, won two World Cup events in 2023 and won at the Asian Games. The other Chinese contender is Hu Yicheng (China). She won bronze at the 2022 World Championship before finishing fourth in 2023. The world champion from 2023 adding to her 2021 crown was Bryony Page (Great Britain). She won Olympic bronze in Tokyo and tends to thrive by using a high-difficulty routine. She only came second at the 2022 World Championship where she was beaten by Hikaru Mori (Japan). Another World Championship medalist is Jessica Stevens (United States) who won bronze in 2023 as well as winning at the Pan-American Games. Behind her was Camila Gomes (Brazil) who performed well in the 2023 World Cup events, winning in Baku. She finished ahead of Lea Labrousse (France) who was fourth in the 2022 World Championship and a European Championship runner-up in 2021. Sophiane Methot (Canada) also has a World Championship bronze, but that was back in 2017, since then her best result was fifth in 2023. Noemi Romero Rosario (Spain) also won bronze at the 2024 European Championship. Seljan Mahsudova (Azerbaijan) won a 2024 World Cup event in Alkmaar and won bronze in Baku in 2023. Anzhela Bladtceva (Russia) won silver at the 2024 World Cup Event in Baku. Madaline Davidson (New Zealand) won silver in Coimbra in 2022. Isabelle Songhurst (Great Britain), Luba Golovina (Georgia), Malak Hamza (Egypt) and Viyaleta Bardzilouskaya (Belarus) will also compete.

This is probably more open than the men’s equivalent. The Chinese pairing are the obvious contenders. Page is hit and miss but when she hits she is probably the best in the field. Other contenders are Bladtceva, Labrousse, Mori and Stevens. I think Page is likely to win or not medal so I have to land her in gold. Xueying is the more consistent of the Chinese pair whereas Yicheng is hit and miss. Mori has not been as impressive lately as she once looked and I think Stevens can be the one taking bronze.

🥇Bryony Page 🇬🇧

🥈Zhu Xueying 🇨🇳

🥉Jessica Stevens 🇺🇸
